Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Grace — a free, open-source, local-first desktop Bible study app. Don't see your question? Get in touch.

Is Grace really free?

Yes. Grace is 100% free and open source under the Apache-2.0 license. There is no paid tier, no license key, and no usage-gated features — every capability is available to everyone for personal, academic, congregational, and commercial use alike.

Does Grace work offline?

Yes. Grace is local-first and makes no network calls on startup. Everything you need to read and study works completely offline. An internet connection is only needed if you choose to fetch optional add-ons from the in-app Downloads menu.

What is bundled with the default install?

The default install includes the King James Version (KJV) Bible text, Webster's 1828 dictionary, Strong's numbers with a morphological apparatus, cross-references, and an embedded Markdown notes editor — enough to start studying immediately.

How do I install Grace on Ubuntu, Windows, or macOS?

Linux users can install the .deb (Ubuntu, Debian, Mint) or the universal Flatpak; Windows users can use the installer or the portable .zip; macOS users use the .dmg. Step-by-step instructions for each format are on the Downloads page.

How do I add more translations, dictionaries, or commentaries?

Open the in-app Downloads menu to add optional, free content: additional public-domain English translations, more dictionaries (Webster 1844 and 1913), and Clarke's commentary plus several other CrossWire-sourced reference works. The in-app Help documents importing your own compatible files.

Where is my data stored?

On your computer. Grace stores your notes, settings, and downloaded content locally in your user data directory. By default nothing is stored in the cloud, and there is no account to create.

Is my reading history or any usage data sent anywhere?

No. Grace has no telemetry and makes no network calls on startup. Your reading history, notes, and searches stay on your machine. Any future cloud sync would be strictly opt-in and documented.

How do I report a bug or request a feature?

Use the contact form on this site to send bug reports, feature requests, and questions. Once the public source repository is announced, an issue tracker will be linked from the About page.

Can I use Grace commercially?

Yes. The Apache-2.0 license permits commercial use, redistribution, and modification with no royalty and no per-seat fees. A small attribution in derivative works is appreciated, but only the Apache-2.0 section 4 obligations are required.
